Racial... Harmony?

Sensitive topic. Always wanted to write about it but can't find a good way to approach it for fear it will spark a war and end up getting myself into trouble. A little spark can start a big fire. But now, I've found a peaceful way to write it out.

We were having a discussion on this topic (Racial Harmony) and then one of my friends suddenly said something very true. "There's no racial harmony in Singapore, there's only racial tolerance." How interesting and true.

Is there really "harmony" among all the races in Singapore? I won't say no but it's not a 100% confirmed "yes" either. Citing all the racist joke such as "you can't see an Indian at night" or "Chinese are dirty pigs". Obviously, those who make such comments are the retarded ones. They are the one who spoils our racial harmony.

I have great Malay friends to begin with. They know our Chinese culture and we know their Malay way of living. We respect their values and beliefs while they understand our tradition. Maybe "respect" is a better word for "tolerance".

Now ask yourself, are you giving "respect" for the other races in Singapore or simply "tolerating" them? For example, the Malay wedding and the Chinese funeral wake at the bottom of the void deck. Are we respecting our fellow Singaporeans or simply tolerating it and trying to ignore it?

You are in a group of discussion where the majority is of another race. Do they talk in a universal language and get you involved? Now turn the table around and ask yourself again.

Which is the race (in Singapore, of course) that appears to be the least harmonious? Why? Sometimes, it's just that they might be the majority at a certain period of undefined time. Then they will start talking, laughing and mocking people from other races. Is it only when you are the minority then you will feel the pain?

Racial tolerance? I think it's true when my friend says "there's no racial harmony in Singapore, there's only racial tolerance." What to do? I don't know. Everyone just need to be a little bit more considerate for the other racial group, maybe tolerance will soon become harmony.

Will there be a racial riot again? What if we can't tolerate anymore?

Random facts about me

Objective
By the end of this entry, you should be able to:
- know more about me
- ... ...

That's all. Time for some very random facts about me, Jerry Wong.

I'm Jerry, yes "Jerry" is my official name as printed in my NRIC and birth certificate. It's not a name I've given myself. Yes, I'm very proud of my name that's why I don't like people to call me wrongly. I am not "Jeremy" or "Jeffery", my name is simply JERRY. Where's Tom? People often asked.

Turning 22 years old this year. Born in the year of Tiger, I'm not fierce but at times, I can get really nasty and hot tempered. Stubborn is my nature. Birthday is on 5th May (0505), my favourite number is 5. Is a lazy taurus. Enjoy rotting around waiting to decompose.

I have poor color sense, that's why my clothing always don't match. Maybe that's the reason why I do badly for art too. My favourite color is colors that are bright. For example, pink, orange and yellow. White is a good color too because of its simplicity.

Eating is a blessing. I like to eat and I love to eat. I'm not very particular about food as I'm not an expert. As long as the food is delicious, it's something my mouth would bite into and chew. However, there's one type of food that I would definitely avoid. Fish. Fish is disgusting and taste horrible! Simply cannot stand fish whether it's fried, boiled or steamed. The only fish I eat would only be fishball and fishcake. Favourite food would be local delicacy rather than foregin meals. Would prefer chicken rice, char kuay tiao, fried hokkien mee and roti prata to sushi or chicken chop. I'm easily contended.

Although I don't like to study, I like to read the newspaper. Reading newspaper is good you know? It keeps yourself updated on the latest happening around the world. The problem with newspaper is that they are too big thus making it heavy to hold in the hand. That's why I prefer to read those small size newspaper. Reading is art.

Music is art too. I like listening to music. Be it noisy songs from Linkin Park or soothing piece from piano, they are all music to my ears. Honestly, I don't like love songs. Most Chinese songs in the mainstream market nowadays are simply failure. They are either about "I-love-you" song or "break-up" song. Jay Chou is different. Yes, Jay Chou is my idol. English song isn't any better, meaningless lyrics most of the time.

I won't call myself a technical geek but I enjoy reading up on the latest techical stuff. It's amazing to see what are the new technologies in mobile phone, what is the "1080" in HD means and more. Fun too to install and try out various new software and then recommend to friend if it's good.

Yes, I love photography but I never thought of being a professional photographer or make a living through photography. It's just an interest I guess. Seeing things through my eyes from my camera's lens is great especially when I share it on Flickr. Instead, I do dream of being a movie director. I wanted to study digital media for my polytechic course but my parents disapprove saying it's of "no future". Being a director is just a dream, so let it stay as a dream.

Dreaming of having a family of my own, sitting on the bench of my garden in my house, eating breakfast with my children and wife. Haiz~ Unknown to many, I had a girlfriend when I was in secondary school. She's a Japanese from.... Japan. Know her through an online forum. Break up because she has to leave Singapore to Japan. Long distance relationship doesn't work.

Now, let me list out some of the things I've bought which deserved to be mentioned.

1. Spalding Infusion basketball
- Costs me about $96 after the discount from the Great Singapore Sales. It's the oldest version. What's so special about this basketball is that it has a built-in pump so that when the air pressure in the ball is low, just use the built-in pump to pump up the pressure instead of searching around for a manual pump.

2. Creative ZEN MP3 player (4GB)
- My first ever MP3 player. Bought it for $269. Must admit that the price is expensive but the sound quality, picture quality and battery life is damn good. 4GB is more than enough for me as I have used only about 3GB.

3. Adidas ClimaCool shoes
- I must be insane to spend about $120 just for a pair of shoes. What attracted me to buy this pair of shoe is the new ClimaCool technology that airs your feet as you wear it. It's also the very first version. It's almost spoil now. Time to save money to buy a new pair.

4. Infernal Affairs trilogy limited edition DVDs
- Bought it the moment I saw it, on the spot. The package comes with 8 DVDs, one calendar poster, one booklet of photos and some scripts. The casing is nice too. Not forgetting that the DVDs are remastered to ensure the highest possible quality in terms of audio and video. Didn't regret spending $130 on this box set.

5. Panasonic DVD recorder
- Simply put it, it's a device that records TV programs directly to DVD. Seldomly used but it's good to have it. Bought it at a sales at only $70. Good deal?

Despite spending so much money on these things, I don't consider myself wasting money. I only spend on things that are worth the money. I'm not like some typical teenagers that spend money on hair, clothes or SMSes.

I'm not stupid although I always give people the impression that I am. I just don't want to be clever. Sometimes, somethings, I just pretend not to know. I enjoy tricking people and playing with people's mind; making them think otherwise.

Quiet most of the time, I'm actually studying people. Trying to think what they are thinking and trying to figure out what will be their next action. Study you.

Sports? When was the last time I play sports? LOL. I support cycling and basketball. Soccer is not my type. No, I don't consider bowling and snooker sports. I don't like them anyway.

I'm not the type of person that yearns for fame or recognition. Whatever things I do, it's either for my own good or out of my own free will. If you like what I'm doing, thanks. If you don't like my ways of presenting things, then too bad. There bound to be someone out there somewhere who appreciates my work. Don't criticise me.

What else do you want to know about me?
